What is the difference between WordPress and Wix?

Both WordPress and WIX allow you to create a desktop and mobile website without writing any code but they have several differences. These are the major differences you should be concerned about when choosing one or the other:

Note: There are two versions of WordPress: WordPress.com and WordPress.org. This will cover WordPress.org.

Web Hosting:

WordPress:

  • You can use any third-party web host.
  • You’ll have to pay a monthly fee for web hosting services.
  • Most third-party hosts give you a lot of features to manage your hosting account.

WIX:

  • Your WIX account comes with free web hosting.
  • You can only host your WIX website on WIX.
  • The options for managing your hosting account are slim to none.

Ease of Use

WordPress:

  • Easy to get started. You or your web host install WordPress then you start building your website.
  • No drag and drop interface by default. You’ll have to install a third-party plugin like Elementor for drag and drop features or use menus to create items.
  • Many templates and plugins can be found in WordPress. Everything else you’ll have to find elsewhere.
  • You’ll have to find solutions to problems online or pay extra for technical support.

WIX:

  • Easy to get started. Create an account and start building your website right away.
  • Drag and drop interface. Drag and drop items where you’d like them to appear on the screen.
  • Everything you need such as templates, apps, and images are free from within your WIX account.
  • Technical support available by email or via the WIX Help Center.

Flexibility

WordPress:

  • Can host your website on most if not all third-party web hosts.
  • Third-party web hosts provide a variety of tools to configure your website.
  • Can start with WordPress.com if don’t want to manage the hosting side of your website.
  • Over 10,000 free and premium themes available plus you can create your own.
  • Many developers contribute to making plugins. There are usually several plugins for the same type of application.

WIX:

  • WIX is the only place you can host a WIX website.
  • You have virtually no tools to manage how your website is hosted.
  • You have to use what they provide. You can’t create your own apps or templates.
  • The features you need to customize your website might require you to upgrade to a more expensive plan.

Price

WordPress:

The WordPress software is free, but you’ll have to pay for web hosting services. Web hosting services can cost between $3 - $10 a month for a shared hosting account. Premium themes and plugins will increase the cost of your website but are not required.

WIX:

The majority of what you’ll pay for a WIX website comes from the plan you choose. You can start with a limited free plan. Premium accounts will cost between $13 - $27 a month to start. All WIX templates are free. You can optionally choose to purchase premium apps which will add to the overall cost of your website.
